As history shows us, few businesses last forever. Very often they will evolve and become part of something else. The "becoming part of something else" is one of the greatest challenges for a CRE team. While this may be an exceptional occurrence, merger and acquisition and divestiture activities are increasingly common. The measure of the capability of any CRE team is how effectively they can respond to these challenges and ensuring they do not get in the way of the evolving business by slowing down the process. Nortel met the ultimate challenge, divesting an entire global company and will share the valuable lessons learned in redirecting and refocusing an entire CRE around new solutions to align with new objectives.
Key Takeaways
• Know how and when to keep the real estate assets out of the deal, including discussions around risks or missed opportunities.
• The changing role of CRE in divestitures - a fundamental change in the DNA of your CRE team. Shifting from cost center to a profit center.

The correlation between people's well-being and their surroundings has been observed historically since the time of Hippocrates, but only recently do we have evidence on the impact of the physical environment on positive outcomes. These outcomes include shorter recovery times in hospitals, improvements in school test scores and higher worker productivity. Behavioral science has been the main source of research, but more recently, neuroscience is providing an opportunity to increase the accuracy in data gathering. This presentation will provide an understanding of evidence-based design and how it may lead more informed and, ultimately, better decisions about the built environment. This presentation will include:
- A review of scientific research exploring the correlation between neuroscience and architecture, critical to our understanding of the effect of the workplace on the brain and on productivity;
-New advances in virtual reality and the ability to monitor brain function now allow us to observe what works and what doesn't as people are experiencing a particular place as represented in 3D.

Key Takeaways
• A scientific study exploring the effects of environmental factors on immune responses in people in different environments which may or may not cause stress, thus limiting productivity.
• Does the research determine if particular types of environments can be designed to be less destructive to the worker's brain and more beneficial to their productivity?

Jim King, LEED AP, Adjunct Professor, Corporate Real Estate, Georgetown University
Many people believe that the time for training and change management is when a remote work or mobility program is first put in place. While that is valuable, it is also important to provide "booster" educational programs over time to keep participants' skills fresh. During this workshop, audience members will work in small teams to experience for themselves the types of skills that are built or reinforced through these "booster" types of learning sessions for virtual teams or organizations where distance collaboration is a core competency. The facilitators will introduce the concepts and exercises and then help the audience teams to share their findings with the group as whole.

It is one thing to envision what the next generation of real estate is going to look like, or even talk about the benefits that could be derived from "connected" real estate, and quite another to show real examples of what people are doing with innovative automation and technology solutions to better manage and operate their portfolios. Early adopters have finished their projects and some of the case studies are simply stunning. Not only did they meet their stated goals and objectives, but some realized their stated ROIs much earlier than anticipated. Gone are the days of manually reading meters, turning off the lights or inspecting fire extinguishers. Come hear from the organizations that are at the forefront of this industry transformation.

Despite the increasing maturity of the service provider marketplace, no single firm is best at delivering all services in all global regions. Due to this reality, companies have traditionally been forced to choose between consistency (small number of service providers) and the best local service delivery. Creating healthy, productive workplaces requires us to think about how to push the sustainable practices beyond large mechanical systems and expert-led construction projects. It's important to engage building tenants and occupants in the process of creating high-performance workplaces. In a panel discussion, U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) assesses three new tools that leverage collaborative, immersive 3-D technologies that allow users to see and address problems endemic in the modern workplace. These tools devised by GSA were developed to align with the economic environmental pressures that drive us to find cost effective ways to change how we do business at every level and demystify practices key to high performance buildings.

In the business services sector, a company's brand and experience is what drives value. Many companies fail to align their brand with their experience and physical locations. In 2006, ManpowerGroup undertook a rebranding of its Manpower brand and was faced with the challenge of delivering its brand promise through the business' Candidate Experience program and the physical look and feel of its branch network. This massive undertaking is an example of how companies can bring their brand to life.
ManpowerGroup needed a CRE and FM partner to make this happen and chose, Johnson Controls Inc. to support them in the design development process. Johnson Controls provided expertise in leading the ongoing value engineering, global project implementation and progress reporting.

In Atlanta, our goal is to catapult some of these ideas into meaningful and provocative debate and subsequent action. A panel of thought provocateurs and workplace visionaries, each with a different point of view, will address topics related to the Summit Theme of Connectivity, Creativity and Relationships. But the speakers will not be doing all the talking: it's going to be about interacting with them and provoking challenge amongst other participants as well – there will be no sideline spectators!
